Multicast and Broadcast

Proper configuration of the protocols is really important because they can cause you lots of problems if you do not do them in a right way.

There could be a few source of problems connected with some protocols for example (IP – Internet Protocol), NetBios, (IPX – Internetwork Packet Exchange), (ARP – Address Resolution Protocol), (SAP – Service Advertising Protocol) or (RIP – Routing Information Protocol).

You may overcome these problems using IOS – Internetworking Operating System which is designed for the Cisco router. Some problems concerning broadcasts can be solved by Cisco routers which offers multicast functions like: filtering of the packets, queuing or selection the proper routing protocol.

You may also encounter some problems with multicast traffic. This would happen if you do not configure them correctly. Yoo need to remember that that multicasts are related with the broadcasts which are designed for the special purpose and for a specific group of people. When you create big multicast groups or have consuming resources application traffic in the internet may consume lots of its resources.

If you want to deal with broadcast problems you can divide your network and implement hubs, routers or switches. However you should alse remember to eliminate bottlenecks from your network. We can recommend you to use VLAN-s (virtual lans). The advantage of this method is that the physical location is not the first issue and you may plug the user to every free switch port you want. In this way you can organise your network in more convenient way.
